Digital World & Crime

As everyone knows that we are living in digital age. It is the time when all of our works are depends upon the electronic media. We use electronic media in our daily uses as to recharge our mobile by ATM or Internet banking, to get the railway or airlines tickets, to book a hotel, to read the books, news, to see the movies, serials or listen the music. In every step of our life we are using this media. The main reason of the popularity of this media is: It saves our time as we lose by doing the same work by traditional methods as well as it saves our money.

Now-a-days it is very beneficial if we know that how can we use this electronic media. To use this electronic media we only require a computer and an internet connection. By this media we can get any information which we want if that is available on that particular server.

Because this is very easy and money saving technology so we use it to do very tiny works. But now-a-days it is misused by its users. They use those information or data to harm the others. A number of contraventions and crimes are committed. Those crimes which are committed via internet called as Cyber Crime. "Cyber Crime" means any illegal behavior committed by means of, or in relation to, a computer system or network, including such crimes as illegal possession [and] offering or distributing information by means of a computer system or network. Donn Parker defined Cyber Crime as a "crime in which the perpetrator uses special knowledge  about computer technology."

The most dangerous cyber crimes are hacking, cyber stalking or online harassment, phishing, credit card frauds, bank robbery, illegal downloading, industrial espionage, child pornography, kidnapping children via chat rooms, scams, cyber-terrorism, cyber fraud & forgery, online gambling creation, online copyright infringement, software piracy and distribution of viruses, spam or uploading the obscene pictures or videos, in internet and so on. These are the crimes which are only committed while being on the Internet and are created exclusively because of the World Wide Web.

HACKING: Hacking is a very serious crime as by its help the people become able to do most of the cyber crimes. "Hacking" refers to "Unauthorized Access to a Computer Network" which may otherwise be called an "Unauthorized Intrusion" In hacking people hack the sites or accounts or computer through cracking the password.

Hacking has been properly defined in Section 66 of Information Technology Act, 2000 as, "Whoever with the intent to cause or knowing that he is likely to cause wrongful loss or damage to the public or any person destroys or deletes or alters any information residing in a computer resource or diminishes its value or utility or affects it injuriously by any means, commits hacking." Under the Information Technology Act, 2000 hacking is punishable as a cyber crime with the imprisonment up to 3 years or with fine which may extend to Rs. 2,00,000/- or with both.

CYBER TERRORISM: Any act done by a person on the computer or computer network or otherwise which threatens unity, sovereignty or security of any state can be called as Cyber Terrorism. Cyber terrorism is a new trend adopted by the terrorist to destroy the peace of any country. The very famous and recent example of it is the attack by the terrorists upon Taj Hotel in Mumbai. By the help of the internet they got each and every information about the hotel & then make a plan to attack.

As we come to know about the misuse of internet to harm others therefore we must aware when we use the internet. Digital media or internet is a medium trough which the whole world is connected.
